A Little Story

The boys handwriting on their homework assignments has been simply awful.

So now, on the the weekends, I make them practice writing and during these weekend sessions their writing is actually pretty neat and clear so I know they can do it. I've told them that when their schoolwork is as neat as their weekend work then they can stop.

While Lev just wants some text to mindlessly copy, Daniel likes to write his own stories. Below is one I thought worthy of posting here. He did not title it (so I took the liberty of providing one) and I corrected all the spellings and punctuation to make it easier for you, his dear readers, to enjoy.

Happy to Be Me
by Daniel

I was shrinking because I ate some cereal.

As I was saying, I ate some Shrinky Dinks. I shrank to the size of a mouse, so my dog picked me up onto his back. He started running up the stairs.

"Yaahoooo!" I screamed.

But now I was up the stairs. So how do I get down the stairs? I thought.

Just then I got an idea. I would get some yarn to get a biscuit to lure the dog down the stairs. But the cat was guarding the yarn. So I would have to just go. So I went to the cat. It was a good thing the yarn was not near the cat so I bit some of it. It was long. I tied it together; it was going to be used as a lasso.

I took it and swung it around my head. It went around the biscuit box and out came an avalanche of biscuits. I tied one to the rope and climbed on the dog's hairy back and put the string of yarned biscuit in front of the massive beast.

He trotted down the steps.

I had to get big again, so I ate Bigsies and grew big again.

I was happy to be me.

I enjoyed the story for many reasons, but I want to point out how he described the "avalanche of biscuits". He did not write that the biscuits came out "like an avalanche", but rather he described the falling biscuits as the avalanche itself. I'm sure any writing teacher would have been as pleased as I was and heaped lots of praise on him...like an avalanche.
