Fish Out of Water

What do you do when you have no knowledge of the water, do not own a boat, and don't even know how to sail? If you're me—you join a yacht club.

This week we joined the Old Greenwich Yacht Club which is located at Greenwich Point in town. Because of the economy, many people have apparently dropped their membership and there is no longer a waiting list. So for an initiation fee and a modest annual fee that we only had to pay half of because of the lateness in the season, we joined. They have great sailing programs for the kids to help them become well-grounded (wait, that would be bad if they were sailing), small sailboats for member use, and the location is just on the edge of Greenwich Harbor where we get sweeping views of the homes of grotesquely rich people.

We went down tonight for the first time where we were welcomed by several friendly sealubbers (they lub the sea). The kids ran around on the shoreline talking on their "shellphones", while I did the only thing I was capable of doing at a yacht club...I cooked hamburgers on the grill. At the very least, it is a great place to go on summer days and evenings. At the most, we'll head out on a few 3-hour tours and hope to do better than the S.S. Minnow.
