We got our first major snow this winter just before New Year's Eve and it hasn't melted since. Temperatures have stayed in the 2o's and the snow just keeps piling on without melting. It looks really pretty...unless you're holding a shovel.
At first the kids were pretty excited when they got shovels for Christmas, saying, "Now we can help you, Dad!" but thinking, "...a little." But Dad, as usual, was one step ahead of them. Let's just say I'm not out there as often as I used to be, but rather giving them a chance to "play" with their presents on the driveway.
It's been over a month now and the snow keeps a fallin' and the cold keeps a chillin'. Now I understand the whole global warming thing. You see, because it's so cold we have to burn more and more oil to warm up. Not to warm the house up, but to warm the planet up so we can then stop burning all the oil to keep warm. It's a vicious circle, but one way or another there will be warmth.
The kids have had countless (OK, the School Board is counting) early release days and extra full days off of school and as a result, they are spending a lot of time at home. So much so that Mom feels like she's back in a Siberian baby home having been promoted to permanent Babushka. Think: Dorothy. Only instead of going home to Kansas, Kansas has followed her to Oz.
A Lev Luge....and Daniel on the Back with a Friend
The kids have managed to do all the usual fun kid-things in the snow; like frolicking, making snow angels, eating snow, and building snowmen, or snow owls. But then once mom and dad step away from the window with idyllic smiles on their faces, the kids resort to throwing snowballs in each others faces, pushing piles of snow down each others backs, throwing heavy things at the house to knock the icicles down, and shoving each other into snowbanks.
But my favorite pastime is not reminding them to bring the shovels into the house when they are done, so after the next snow storm I get to tell them to go out and look for them.
